SUMMER
We talked about stopping and getting clothes before we showed up for dinner, but since the Davidsonâs live in the middle of nowhere between Ouray and Telluride there wasnât really a place to stop and shop. Plus, the whole âNo shoes. No shirt. No service,â thing presented a problem. We have shoes, but definitely lacking in the shirt department. Thatâs why we pull up to the Davidsonâs house in our swimsuits.
âIâd let you wear my pants, but I donât have any.â Calebâs smile is chock-full of humor.
I do my best to maintain a serious glare. âThis isnât funny.â
âItâs kind of funny.â
âNo, itâs not. My brand-new snow clothes got stolen along with my underwear and bra. We got kicked out of a hotel by a security guard. Iâm wearing a cheeky deer bikini. Iâm wet and freezing, and Iâm supposed to go inside your parentsâ house and have dinner with your family with no clothes on. What about this is funny?â
His lips twitch, and I know heâs going to lose it. He covers his mouth with the palm of his hand, trying to hold in his laughter.
âItâs not funny!â My irritated facade falters, and I show a smile that I desperately try to hide from him. âItâs not!â
But itâs no use. We both give in and spend the next minute laughing at how ridiculous the day has turned out.
Caleb reaches for the handle. âLetâs make a run for the front door before we turn into an icicle.â
âOn the count of three?â I hold my handle too.
âOne, two, three!â We count in unison and then climb out of the car in a rush.
Caleb waits for me to catch up to him. His hand extends, and Iâm so cold I donât even think twice about grabbing it and running to the house with my hand in his. Weâre still laughing when we reach the front doorâthe alternative is freezing to death.
He twists the knob, and we barrel inside but stop the moment we see his mom, dad, and Justin looking at us with blank expressions.
âSummer?â Justinâs expression is not amused.
âCaleb?â Patsy frowns at her son.
âWhat are you guys doing?â I follow Justinâs gaze as he assesses our deer bathing suits and then stops on our handsâ¦currently still joined together.
I yank my fingers out of Calebâs grasp. âOur clothes got stolen at the hot springs, and they kicked us out.â
âWithout giving us towels,â Caleb adds, and Iâm relieved to have someone help explain.
âSo we had no clothes and had to come here for dinner like this.â
âWe thought about stopping and buying clothes.â Caleb looks at me. âBut there wasnât a lot of open stores to choose from, especially on a Sunday evening.â
Thereâs a distinct V between Justinâs brows as he listens to us rattle off excuses. âWhat are you wearing?â
I nervously cover my body with my arms. âIt was the only swimsuit they had at the gift shop.â
âI thought you were going ice climbing.â The accusatory look on Justinâs face hasnât softened once since we arrived.
